Arizona is offering a new multibillion-dollar semiconductor manufacturing facility.
Phoenix-based Hyperion Technologies Inc. plans to establish a manufacturing facility in the West Valley to produce high-density interconnect substrates that enhance semiconductor chip performance. Semiconductor chips are small electronic circuits that control the flow of electricity.
The company has proposed a 600,000-square-foot factory that could potentially create up to 1,500 jobs in Peoria, a suburb of the metro Phoenix area. Estimates indicate that the project could generate a $6.6 billion economic output in the Phoenix region over the next decade and generate 4,500 construction jobs.
Many semiconductor chips will connect using Hyperion’s advanced substrates, enhancing performance in fields like artificial intelligence and high-performance computing. We expect the facility to have a capacity of millions of units each year.
This project will contribute to an increasing surge of semiconductor companies aiming to grow in Peoria. The city is also considering establishing an airpark and more mega-sites to attract major tech industries to the area. Amkor Technology Inc. is planning to build a $2 billion semiconductor packaging plant in Peoria, close to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.’s $65 billion facility in north Phoenix.
Hyperion is in the process of planning an expansion into advanced semiconductor IC substrate fabrication.
“The company stated in a release to the BJ that while the United States aims to improve the resilience of its domestic semiconductor supply chain and improve the overall ecosystem, the high-volume availability of IC substrates remains a critical, missing link.
Hyperion said it is also working diligently with investors, customers, technology partners and state and local representatives on announcing its expansion strategy and plans for a one-of-a-kind operation in the U.S., although a site for the project has not been uncovered.
A spokesperson for the Arizona Commerce Authority said that they are unable to provide comments on Hyperion due to it being an “active competitive project.”
The project timeline on Hyperion’s website indicates that construction will begin in the second half of 2025, with major completion anticipated by the end of 2026. According to a city spokesperson, Hyperion has not yet submitted the pre–application or site plans for the project to the city of Peoria.
“The city is committed to improving our economy through a wide variety of employment sectors,” a city official said. “The development of advanced semiconductor infrastructure is crucial to our strategy for increasing local job opportunities and improving supply chain security in our nation.” There has been an increase in awareness and the need to develop technological strategies and solutions for everyday operations, and the possibilities are endless.
Hyperion believes that its technology will find applications in multiple sectors such as defense and aerospace, aviation, automotive, high-performance computers, data centers, electric vehicles, energy, medical devices, and consumer electronics.
Technology is advancing in our homes constantly. As we make smaller tasks easier and less time consuming, we can shift our focus to develop larger scale innovations. There are no limits on what is possible.
